Gerard Raj, Chief Choreographer at Dance Singapore, is an established choreographer and dance instructor who is best known for his creative designs in dance movements and teaches people to perform through the feel of music and rhythm. Gerard Raj’s versatile career has been highlighted by a diverse mix of events and choreographed concerts. In 1997, Gerard Raj was Singapore’s only events director to be invited by The Reagent to help stage the historic Hong Kong Handover. At the onset of the new millennium, Raj Gerard directed ‘Party Across the Century’ at Hong Kong Bay with world-acclaimed artistes and guests.
He is also the founder of D’Artistes, a registered non-profit volunteer group focusing on opportunities in the performing arts for children and youths with intellectual disabilities. D’Artistes has been conferred the Institution of a Public Character (IPC) status which is only awarded to not-for-profit or non-profit organisations. This IPC status authorises D’Artistes to issue tax deduction receipts to its donors.
Gerard Raj was the main guest choreographer at Television Corporation of Singapore (TCS), MediaCorp’s predecessor, Singapore’s commercial media company that handles television and radio broadcasting, print publishing and filmmaking, and interactive media. At TCS, Gerard Raj choreographed dance items for Channel 5 (the English channel), Suria (the Malay Channel), and Channel 8 (the Mandarin Channel). Gerard Raj’s other involvement in the media industry also included being the choreographer and lead dancer for celebrities like Su Rei, Anita Sarawak and Sonia. He previously also worked with Southern Sons, Aaron Kwok, Andy Lau and Sarah McLachlan during their concerts and various events in Singapore.
As co-choreographer for Singapore’s Bid for the first-ever Youth Olympic Games in 2008, Gerard Raj went on to contribute to the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in the “Passing of the Torch” ceremony, as well as taking charge of two mass-display contingents: New Zealand (with Island Breeze) and Dakkar/Senegal (Africa).
Gerard Raj supervised and managed the cast for Disney’s ‘High School Musical Summer Tour’ at the Indoor Stadium, and was the Singapore Director for the globally-renowned ‘Gawad Kalinga’ (which means ‘to give hope’) Summit held in Singapore. His Singapore participants featured singers and dancers in a showcase to the theme of ‘Asians ending poverty in Asia’, in a concert which raised funds for sustainable housing in the Philippines. He was in charge of the choreography of the opening routine by cheerleaders for the 2009 President’s Challenge, an annual campaign comprising events and activities that raises funds for charity organisations that are appointed by the President’s Office.
In 2013, Gerard Raj was involved in the Singapore Special Olympics’s post-parade show with special-needs schools and institutions. Gerard Raj’s greatest strength is to turn untrained dancers, people with very little or no dance experience at all, into performance-quality dancers. Because of his passion to bring out the talents of people in the dance aspect, he has trained hundreds of ordinary people for D&Ds, various projects and even national performances.
